Swampscott’s hockey team faced an overtime situation Saturday evening, passing it with flying colors against Latin Academy.

In Saturday’s road tilt, the Big Blue squeaked it out, 2-1, after Ryan Frary’s goal with 15 seconds remaining in the game. Jackson Bartram tucked one late in the third period to force sudden death.

Let’s not forget Frankie Pappalardo, who assisted both goals. Kody Langevain and Quinn Hitchcock also racked up helpers and, per usual, goalie Dom Pappalardo did his job with 27 saves.

Swampscott returns to the ice Wednesday night against Peabody-Saugus with puck-drop set for 7:30 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lynn Tech 71

Boston English 62

Lynn Tech stayed red hot with a single-digit win against Boston English in a Saturday matinee at home. The victory brought its record to 14-2 and 9-1 in the Commonwealth Athletic Conference.

Jayden Welch was the top dog – or, Tiger – in this one, dropping 24 points to go with seven boards and two assists. Travis Sanches followed, scoring 16 alongside three rebounds and three assists. 

St. Mary’s 63

Martha’s Vineyard 50

Talk about bouncing back. After Friday night’s home loss against fellow Division 3 program Newburyport, St. Mary’s defeated Martha’s Vineyard by double digits the next day.

Jake Fortier led the Spartans with 17 points, followed by JJ Martinez (13) and Kyle Rush (12).

Malden Catholic 1

After a tough 6-0 game against powerhouse St. John’s Prep earlier in the week, St. Mary’s icemen responded with a 3-1 victory against Malden Catholic at Connery Rink in Lynn. Finn Racki (2 goals) and Stephen Nason (1) were in charge of scoring duties, while goalie Patrick Babineau secured his first win of the season.

Racki’s first goal was assisted by his brother, Caleb, in the first period.

Scituate 3

Lynnfield 1

Despite a goal from Jarret Scoppettuolo, his Lynnfield Pioneers fell to Scituate at McVann-O’Keefe Rink in Peabody on Saturday.

Scoppettuolo’s clutch third-period goal cut a 2-0 deficit in half, but the Sailors tucked an empty-netter to seal the deal on the Pioneers, who dropped to 8-9 with the loss. 

St. John’s Prep 6

Newburyport 2

The visiting Newburyport Clippers fought until the end, but were no match for The Prep, which upped its record to 14-3 before Wednesday’s home showdown against Andover.

In the 6-2 final, Prep’s Jake Vana scored four goals – two in the third – to lead the way. He scored on a breakaway and power play in this one. Camden Umlah and Mason Luciano potted the others. 

Pentucket 7

Lynn 0

Despite a 28-save performance from Nicholas DeNino of the Jets, Lynn fell on the road to Pentucket Saturday afternoon.

Marblehead 3

Danvers 2

After a seven-game winning streak, Marblehead had to settle for a tie against Danvers on Saturday. Kyle Hart (2 assists), Avin Rodovsky, and Cam Waldman scored the goals, while James Caeran dished out two helpers for the Headers.

GIRLS HOCKEY

PLNR 10

Newburyport 3

No home ice, no problem for the Peabody-Lynnfield-North Reading girls hockey squad, which delivered a 10-piece to Newburyport on Saturday. 

Do-it-all Ava Buckley led the charge with two goals and four assists, while Shirley Whitmore and Mia Lava scored two apiece. 

PLNR faces Winthrop at Larsen Rink Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Shawsheen 4

Marblehead 1 

The Lady Headers dropped one to Shawsheen at home in a Saturday evening showdown, but not without positives. Madi Reno tickled twine in the third period, while freshman goalie Scarlett Lee continued her hot streak with another 41 saves.

WRESTLING

In the Division 2 North Sectionals at Burlington High School, the co-op grappling team of Marblehead-Swampscott finished seventh out of 13 teams and saw six of its wrestlers move on to states.

Mason Hinshaw (144 pounds) and Angelo Knight (215) secured first-place finishes, while Brady Haskell (106) and Liam O’Brien (120) earned seconds. Justin Gonzalez (285) finished fourth, while Ben O’Brien (190) went home with fifth.
