Top 3 Ways To Improve Bus Transportation Accessibility

Achieving bus transport accessibility should be an important part of any bus organization’s considerations. Municipalities owe it to the public to make their lives easier. A huge part of that is improving accessibility for everyday people attempting to get around the city. So what are some of the top ways we can improve bus transportation accessibility? Learn more below.

Offer Low-Income Ridership Fees

There are several ways to make bus transport more accessible, but one of the easiest is lowering ridership fees. Many public bus systems only charge around a couple of dollars to make them more usable for more people. This also includes transfers for people who need to change buses to reach their destinations. Offering lower ridership fees keeps public transport affordable for many people. When people can’t afford to get to work or school, how can they take care of themselves? This is an essential part of improving bus transportation accessibility.

Have Handicap Options

Can you imagine wanting to go somewhere but not being able to? People with handicaps have to deal with this every day. Perhaps a store doesn’t have a motorized cart for people who have trouble walking, so they can’t shop there. Or a building may not have a ramp to allow people in wheelchairs to enter. You don’t want to follow this poor example. Instead, ensure you outfit buses with handicap accessibility in mind. Make sure you have lifts in buses for people who are in wheelchairs and straps to keep their chairs locked in one place. Older people might need to sit in front where it’s easier to hear their stop over the loudspeaker. Taking these small measures can have a big impact on our communities.

Train Your Drivers

You must train your drivers to understand the unique needs of their passengers and educate them on various disabilities that may impact their riders’ experience. Compassion is key, and sometimes you can only cultivate that through training. You also want to train them to support people who might be taking their first bus ride. Accessibility is a more nuanced topic than you think. It’s not just about letting people get on the bus and sit down; it requires you to take a more holistic approach by making these kinds of considerations.
