Study shows 16.3 million vacant homes in US, 1.7 million in Florida

MIAMI, Florida: According to a new LendingTree study of home vacancies across the U.S., Florida has the greatest number of empty homes in the country.

In addition, the study found there are more than 16 million empty houses across the United States.

Florida also has the sixth largest percentage of vacant units in the U.S., with a 17.13 percent vacancy rate, behind only five other states.

The U.S. has a total of about 140.44 million homes, with some 124 million being occupied.

According to the LendingTree analysis of U.S. Census data, the top ten states with the most empty homes are Vermont (22.86 percent), Maine (22.68 percent), Alaska (20.51 percent), West Virginia (18.12 percent), Alabama(17.69 percent), Florida (17.13 percent), New Hampshire (16.74 percent), Mississippi (16.26 percent), Louisiana (16.21 percent) and Wyoming (15.88 percent).

Based on the LendingTree numbers pulled from data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau, the national vacancy rate is 11.66 percent, with 16,385,739 homes not being lived in.

Of the more than 16 million homes without residents, the largest number of empty homes is in Florida, with 1,680,844 houses being empty, followed by California (1,248,161), Texas (1,216,084), New York (955,437) and Michigan (631,361).

The high number of vacant homes comes as home prices and rents continue to rise.

Home sale prices are also rising. Florida Taxwatch noted, “Affordability is a core concern when it comes to rapid rent growth, impacting working families and local businesses.”

According to LendingTree, Florida’s median home value is $261,500, higher than all but one of the preceding top five state in its home vacancy rankings. Its study also noted high vacancies do not explain why homes are becoming more expensive, which could be attributed to increasingly low inventories of homes for sale.

Recent reports by real estate company Zillow indicate available housing inventories across the U.S. are down by almost 50 percent, with Tampa’s having fallen by 30 percent.

According to a study by Redfin, Tampa is the third most popular place to move in the U.S., with the only city being more popular as a mover’s destination being Miami.
