Smart parking meters go live in Peabody

Anyone visiting the main streets of Downtown Peabody can now use the city’s new smart parking meters.

“The city is installing digital meters in an effort to make downtown parking more visible, convenient and customer friendly,” Mayor Ted Bettencourt said in a Facebook post last year.

Bettencourt also recently said that the new meters are a response to the dramatic resurgence that Downtown Peabody has experienced over the past 10 years.

“Upgrading our parking technology encourages more people to visit the many restaurants, shops, and attractions on Main Street and throughout downtown.” Bettencourt said.

The city website says that the meters were installed “to improve the accessibility and reliability of parking in Peabody.”

The $1.5 million was funded through state and local grants, according to Bettencourt’s office.

For those paying for a spot, accessibility features will show up on the meter including hourly rates, time limits, and other relevant information. Those planning to park are encouraged to be ready to supply a valid form of payment and their plate numbers. The smart meters take coins, valid credit and debit cards, and contactless payment, but if paying with coins, the meters only take exact change.

Downloading the Park Smarter app can also allow people to adjust the time set on their meter on-the-go, pay electronically, see available spots ahead of time, and receive payment receipts.
