The Lynn English boys basketball team – fresh off its Greater Boston League crowning on Thursday – protected homecourt against Brockton Friday night, 84-79, but it wasn’t easy.
They don’t call them the Boxers for nothing. Brockton took a lead in the third quarter after a loud dunk, and thanks to some sharpshooting, entered the fourth quarter down just one (67-66).
But English put on a show in the fourth quarter. Kyle Kemembin connected at the rim to give the hosts an 82-74 lead with a minute remaining.
Brockton went on a 5-0 run to make things interesting, but it wasn’t enough to top the Bulldogs, who upped their record to 15-3 on a Senior Night they’ll never forget.
English’s Pierre Vera (16 points), Carmelo Buese (15), Pauwill Deng (14), Denzell Guillen (14), Kemembin (13), and Joshua Anderson (10) led the charge.
The Bulldogs host Cambridge Rindge & Latin (14-2) Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in another dandy.

Marblehead 131.9
Peabody 98.65
Marblehead got the job done in a gymnastics meet against the Tanners of Peabody, escaping with a 131.9-98.65 win.
For Peabody, it was a loss, but not without positives.
“Another meet with lots of personal bests for our kids. We are so continuously proud of our non-experienced gymnasts,” said Peabody coach Mackenzie Bernice.
Senior captain Kim Viera stuck the beam with a 6.2, while do-it-all co-captain Bailey Merchant secured a 6.2 on vault, 4.5 on bars, 6 on beam, and 6.6 on floor.
Molly Hagerty (personal best 8.1 on vault), Cairo Martinez (5.8 on floor; 5.2 on bars), Maddy Semper (6.35 on vault) all contributed, as did Anastasia Marckini, who “competed for her first time ever in high school gymnastics with a 6.4 on vault,” as said by Bernice.
