NEW YORK CITY, New York: After last week’s mass shooting on board a Manhattan-bound N train in Sunset Park, New York Mayor Eric Adams said he is considering three types of metal detectors to be purchased for the city’s subway system.
During a news conference, Adams said he is delegating the task of researching the best type of detector to Phil Banks, deputy mayor for public safety, but he offered few details on added costs, who will monitor the equipment and where they will be installed.
Last week, the mayor’s office confirmed to Gothamist that it is considering a system made by Massachusetts-based Evolv Technology, which is used by several city institutions, including Lincoln Center, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and the American Museum of Natural History. The detectors were also installed at the Museum of Modern Art, where two employees were stabbed last month.
The mayor initially mentioned the use of metal detectors last week after the subway shooting in Sunset Park, where 10 people were killed and 13 injured.
Metal detectors have been previously used in New York City’s subway system. In 2018, the NYPD installed a metal detector at the Port Authority as part of a pilot program to combat terrorist attacks.
During that time, Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, said the use of metal detectors in subways will only “impart an illusion of safety and security at a very high cost of freedom.”
At this week’s news conference, Adams said the detectors will simply add a layer of security, stating, “New Yorkers are going to feel safe knowing that when they swipe their MetroCards that we are doing some type of check to make sure people are not carrying weapons on our system.”
