SAUGUS – The Lynn and Saugus fire departments responded to a porch fire in the Ironwood North Apartments at 167 Fairmount Avenue on Sunday morning.
According to Rich Adams, who lives in an apartment near where the flames started, from his window he saw flames coming up from the top as he was getting ready for work. The fire alarm went off, and so he grabbed his cat and left. According to a passerby, she saw that a porch was up in flames.
Lynn Fire Chief Dan Sullivan said that the fire started on the third floor, which extended to the fourth floor and into an attic space.
“Both Lynn and Saugus got the phone call because this is right in the line,” Sullivan said. “Saugus was here first. They were able to knock down the fire on the porch, and it already extended from the third floor to fourth, then into the attic space.”
Sullivan said there are three people currently displaced.
“There are three people as of right now who are displaced, who are going to need a place to go,” Sullivan said. “There are a total of 49 units, eight of which are unoccupied, and a total of 52 people live in the building. We won’t know until we go through, how many people, if any, we’re gonna let back in the building today.”
Sullivan said that at the moment, all flames, except for a few hotspots, have been put out.
“We have a good handle on it right now,” Sullivan said.
