IRVINE, California: A 113-pound mountain lion shocked customers at an Irvine, California hair salon after running past the shop and later striking a glass window.
Elliot Matthews, an employee at Bishops Cuts and Colors in Sand Canyon Plaza, said, “I was standing at the front desk and a client says, ‘Oh my God.’ All I saw at first was this big thing and a tail,” as reported by the Orange County Register.
“Surprisingly, people were still getting their hair cut,” he added.
Rebecca Barboza, wildlife biologist with the California Fish and Wildlife Department, said the cougar became agitated and ran into another building through an open door.
People inside that building ran to a higher floor, but the animal had no way of escaping, and a veterinarian, Dr. Scott Weldy of Serrano Animal and Bird Hospital, was able to get close enough to tranquilize the mountain lion.
“The cat was trying to get out and trying to find a place to go, so it was just sitting in corners and it climbed up on tables,” she said.
After being sedated, the cougar was transported to Weldy’s clinic for a check-up and to be collared for future tracking.
The California Mountain Lion Project, led by Dr. T. Winston Vickers, has been studying mountain lions in Southern California since 2001. Researchers have placed GPS collars on mountain lions to collect data about their diet, habitat, health and behavior.
According to researchers, the mountain lion that was apprehended in Irvine was between 16 to 20 months of age, based on its weight of 113.7 pounds, typically the age range when they leave their families.
“It looked very confused, it did not look like it wanted to attack,” Matthews, from the salon, said.
Irvine Police Sgt. Mike Meyers reported that no people were reported injured.
The mountain lion will be released in a habitat with plenty of space, water source and food, but the specific locations where it is released will not be disclosed.
