The Lynnfield Community Vision Draft Plan revealed a strong consensus among residents regarding the need for improved transportation connections within the town, particularly focusing on well-maintained sidewalks and safe bicycle facilities.
According to a survey taken for the draft plan, 67% of respondents emphasized the importance of multi-modal transportation options.
“Lynnfield needs to provide greater access to bike and walking trails both for recreational purposes but also to improve access to key areas in town with increasing traffic,” one respondent said. “Greater focus on open spaces and trails that residents can use for community activities and to move around town will not only address environmental concerns but also improve the quality of life in Lynnfield for all ages.”
According to the plan put together by the Planning Board, this desire for enhanced transportation infrastructure aligns with broader community aspirations for increased social opportunities and cohesion. Survey respondents expressed an interest in maintaining and improving public facilities such as libraries, schools, and other gathering spaces, alongside developing new recreational opportunities like a multigenerational recreation center.
“All of those abandoned office spaces behind the center, as well as the front of the center itself, should be re-hauled,” one respondent said. “It is the perfect space to create places for the community to come together for a purpose.”
“Would love to see more vibrant areas in town and local transportation options that can help young teens and young adults be occupied and have entertainment,” another respondent said.
74% of respondents believe it is crucial for Lynnfield to be a community where everyone can thrive, while 64% stress the importance of addressing access to health and social services.
Residents and high-school students identified the lack of bike paths and sidewalks as a significant challenge facing Lynnfield. Many express a longing for a revitalized town center and the development of vibrant community spaces where small businesses can thrive and residents can gather.
“Outside of MarketStreet, what is there to do in Lynnfield?” one respondent asked. “Would like more recreation opportunities – bike paths! Maybe a movie theater or something that gets people out of their homes.”
In envisioning a more livable and connected town, residents emphasized the importance of building bike and walking trails, enhancing public spaces, and addressing the inadequacies of existing sidewalks and roads.
“It’s upsetting that we feel no closer to a bike path than when it was voted in at Town Meeting. The sidewalks are terrible, and kids often have to ride bikes in the streets. Either fix the sidewalks or make bike paths on the streets, please!” one respondent wrote.
The sentiment was echoed by young respondents, who highlighted the need for more community spaces and recreational opportunities to keep young people engaged and included.
According to the plan, the feedback gathered from the survey will shape future master plan topics, including community services, open space, housing, and economic development, to be refined through comprehensive planning. The plan emphasized safe recreational spaces for all, especially seniors and youth with limited mobility. The plan also highlighted the importance of revitalizing the town center with diverse businesses and housing options, respecting Lynnfield’s heritage, and assessing and enhancing transportation networks within Lynnfield and neighboring areas.
