LA PALMA, Spain: The Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma in Spain’s Canary Islands exploded on Sunday, as scientists warned that the volcano is becoming “much more aggressive.”
According to The Associated Press, while the volcano is continuing to erupt and spewing more lava into the sea, multiple earthquakes have been recorded by local authorities, as well as a new flow of fiery lava.
More than 6,000 people, including 400 tourists, have since been evacuated.
The EU’s Copernicus Earth Observatory Service tweeted that the lava rolled into the ocean at Playa del Perdido, destroying 656 homes and 662 acres of land.
One home, dubbed the “miracle house” since it survived a past river of lava, was also destroyed.
The owner of the house, Ranier Cocq, told Spanish news site El Mundo, “Everything has been destroyed. We have lost everything on our beloved island. It is very sad.”
ngel Vctor Torres, President of the Canary Islands, said the damage caused by the eruption will cost some $466 million.
The Canary Islands Volcano Institute predicts that the eruptions could continue for another month.
La Palma was declared a disaster zone by the Spanish government, which promised to provide financial assistance to those suffering losses.
