Chicago to fully reopen on June 11, says mayor

CHICAGO, Illinois: Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced on Thursday that she has accelerated the timetable for a full reopening from coronavirus restrictions on June 11.

The state of Illinois will also end most Coronavirus restrictions on that date.

The original plans called for bars, restaurants, hotels and sports stadiums to open to full capacity on July 4. However, she said on Thursday that Chicago was prepared to join the rest of Illinois in ending all capacity restrictions on June 11.

“Because you’ve masked up, socially distanced and got vaccinated, we’re now moving to Phase 5 on Friday, June 11, in alignment with the state. This means Chicago is scheduled to fully reopen”, she said.

Chicago authorities have reported seeing a seven-day average of 135 new COVID-19 cases per day, which is down 44 percent from last week and under the 200 cases per day measure that health officials have long said would indicate that the pandemic is well under control.

Also, hospitalizations have fallen 57 percent from the previous week and deaths are down to an average of four per day, reported NBC Chicago, citing city data.

As of this week, two-thirds of Illinois adults have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while some 51 percent are fully vaccinated.
