You know what I’ve been thinking? Perhaps the story of the week was Marblehead’s boys hockey team reaching the Division 3 state championship after an 0-6 start. As for how that happened, the goalie position was a big piece of the puzzle.
With the lights shining their brightest, Leo Burdge was a man-on-a-mission this past week, recording wins against No. 2 Shawsheen Valley Tech and No. 3 Scituate. The Headers (now 16-9-1 with four tournament wins) are ranked sixth.
Wednesday night in a 2-1 victory against Scituate, Burdge made 21 saves against an explosive offense, which scored six goals in its previous game against Watertown.
Fast forward to Saturday. The netminder made another 23 saves in front of a Stoneham Arena crowd, frankly, flooding with fans. He also faced a 5v3 situation in favor of Shawsheen late in the third period, but the Headers held on to win, 2-1.
Is it 3 p.m. on Sunday yet? Burdge and company take on top-seeded Nauset at TD Garden for all of the championship marbles.
Leo, good week.
