HAWTHORNE, California: After Ukrainian Vice Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov asked Elon Musk to help the embattled country with internet connections, the SpaceX billionaire said Starlink is now available throughout Ukraine.
“Starlink service is now active in Ukraine,” Musk tweeted some ten hours after the call for help. “More terminals en route.”
Fedorov asked Musk for Starlink stations, stating on Twitter, “@elonmusk, while you try to colonize Mars, Russia try to occupy Ukraine! While your rockets successfully land from space, Russian rockets attack Ukrainian civil people!”
Musk’s response also came as Ukraine faced a fourth day of assaults from Russia.
Through SpaceX, Musk launched thousands of Starlink satellites into Earth’s orbit, offering broadband service to many parts of the world.
The satellites can help transfer large amounts of data rapidly to any point on Earth, avoiding the need for fiber-optic cables, and could provide data links to areas of Ukraine that have lost internet access during the war.
Russia’s attacks on Ukrainian cities, which began on February 23 when Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation,” had begun, have left parts of the country without internet access.
