NEW YORK CITY, New York: According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll completed this week, 73 percent of Americans support the efforts of the United States to supply Ukraine with weapons, the highest level of support since the start of the Russian invasion in February.
The two-day poll comes as a senior Russian official warned that the West should not underestimate the elevated risk of nuclear conflict, as the U.S. and its allies are carrying out plans to deliver heavy weapons to Ukraine.
Before international outrage erupted over the discovery of atrocities against civilians north of Kyiv, a previous Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted in late March found that 68 percent of respondents backed providing weapons to Ukraine.
The latest poll also showed most Democrats and Republicans backed U.S. sanctions on Russia and say they prefer candidates in midterm congressional election on 8th November who support military aid for Ukraine.
According to the poll, Americans rate President Joe Biden’s response to the Ukraine crisis as higher than his handling of other issues, such as the economy and rising energy prices, but his general lack of popularity could see the Democratic Party lose control of Congress in November.
The poll showed some 46 percent of Americans, including 70 percent of Democrats and 24 percent of Republicans, approve of Biden’s performance on Ukraine, while his approval on the economy is at 37 percent, and regarding fuel and gas prices, he only registered a 32 percent approval.
Another Reuters/Ipsos poll also completed last week showed only 42 percent of Americans approve of Biden’s overall performance, close to the lowest level during his presidency.
