DENVER, Colorado — Some 83 high-end condominium units were torched in a massive blaze early Tuesday morning in the affluent city of Boulder, Colorado, located 30 miles (48.2 kilometers) northwest of Denver, the capital city of the state.
Although no serious injuries were reported, two people were treated at the scene for minor injuries and one “actually jumped a short distance but was safely caught,” CBS News 4 Denver reported.
The fire engulfed several buildings along Boulder’s famous Pearl Street, ABC News 7 reported, not far from the affluent city’s most famous landmark, Pearl Street Mall, a four-block pedestrian mall.
Flames were shooting out of the roof of one of the buildings while firefighters arrived just after 3:30 a.m., the report said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Fire crews had the blaze under control by 5:40 a.m. local time, but the fire was still smoldering in the early afternoon, according to local media.
More than 1,000 businesses fill the red-brick, pedestrian-only thoroughfare of nearby Pearl Street Mall, which runs for several blocks roughly along Pearl Street, according to colorado.com.
Pearl Street is “a street lined with restaurants, shops and people watching,” bouldercoloradousa.com says on its website, and “is the heart and soul of Boulder – and has been for more than four decades!”
Boulder, home of the University of Colorado and its 36,000 students, is one of the most affluent, desired communities in the country. In April, Boulder’s median single-family home price reached 1,557,500 U.S. dollars, up 55.74 percent from a year before, local media reported.
