Lynn rap group practices patience on new album

Lynn-based Hip-Hop trio Eastside Most Hated (EMH) is looking to make a change with their latest album, “It Takes Time.”

The group, which released its second project Monday, is composed of three artists, including C4, Melly Kash, and Lil East, who all hail from East Lynn.

C4 said patience is key and that the little steps you take in life will result in higher levels of success.

“To achieve greatness, being patient is crucial,” he said.

C4 also said the group doesn’t make typical rap music and blends traditional rap with pop, and they are about “bringing the vibes of having a good time.”

“It takes time for greatness. You can’t rush it. If you rush it, it may not come out the way you expected it to come out,” C4 said.

The members all grew up together and eventually established a group in 2020. C4 and Melly Kash attended Lynn English High School, and Lil East attended Kipp Academy.

The new project was recorded downtown. Aaron Rodriguez created the artwork for the album. Lil East said actual experiences inspired the name of the album.

“We’re trying to get to a goal and do better. Sometimes it’s hard, you know, because you get distracted,” Lil East said. “Things happen, you know, on your way to work, you get a popped tire, you get distracted… little things like that… What I was trying to say is everything takes time. Don’t rush through everything in life because rushing through things can lead you in a bad direction.”

The album has four songs. On the first song, “Peace of Mind,” Melly Kash takes listeners on a melodic ride, singing about his relationships, then C4 steps up on the second verse, discussing trust. With Harmony, Lil East wraps up the songs in the last verse.

C4 said the group started brainstorming album ideas a few months ago to come up with the concept for “It Takes Time.”

The recording process went smoothly, C4 said, and the members all meshed together for a succinct album from start to finish.

“It has to speak to you. It has to spark a fire in you,” C4 said.

C4 said the album spreads a positive message to the youth in the city.

“It’s not the regular mainstream music that everybody listens to,” He said. “We’re not talking about hurting people; we’re not talking about no gangs, no violence. Our message is really just to bring a sense of joy and happiness and, you know, that old-school vibe of just having fun with everybody.”

C4 said Lynn has a stereotype of being a bad city.

“You’re going to have that in every city… but apparently, that’s the stereotype for anybody from Lynn. Another stereotype is that we have so much talent, but we don’t capitalize on it, and we just turn to the streets. Our message is to show that we are more than just a violent drug-inhabited city,” C4 said.

C4 said it takes the right individuals to really make a difference.

“Growing up, of course, you would see your goods and your bads, but there’s more good than bad,” he said. “I just feel like people just really focus on the bad instead of the good that the city actually does.”

“It Takes Time” is available on all streaming platforms. EMH will be opening up for popular New York rapper Jim Jones at Diaspora in Harvard Square on Feb. 23.
