ROUNDUP: Lady Spartans fall for the first time this season

After nine wins in as many tries, St. Mary’s girls basketball team (9-1) met its match against host Cathedral Friday night.

The Spartans cut the deficit to seven points in the second half, but to no avail against a versatile Cathedral side.

Reese Matela of St. Mary’s scored 22 points in defeat, while Charleigh Green hit a 3-pointer to give the Spartans a lead in the second quarter.

Sharpshooting Keyona Raines (19 points), Allan-Paisley (15), and Jasmine Day-Cox (13) led the Cathedral charge.

BOYS BASKETBALL

St. Mary’s 61

Cathedral 47

Keeping his hot hand intact since last week’s Walter J. Boverini Tournament, Kyle Rush (18) led the host Spartans in scoring with all six of his field goals coming from downtown.

JJ Martinez played well for St. Mary’s (6-1), while Treyvon Fields impressed for Cathedral.

Swampscott 67

Danvers 47

Big Blue, big-time performances from Liam Wales (20 points) and Connor Chiarello (17) in a 20-point Swampscott win.

Nakeylan Davis added nine points for Swampscott (4-2), which travels to face Northeast Metro on Monday.

“We won the game on our defensive pressure,” said Swampscott coach Jason Knowles.

Saugus 59

Pioneer Charter 29

In a game in which every Sachem scored, Saugus’ boys basketball team (3-4) got the job done against Pioneer Charter at home.

Danny Shea (16 points) and Cam Victor (14) led the charge for Saugus, which returns home against Gloucester on Monday.

Peabody 60

Salem 48

Thanks to red-hot Raphel Laurent (21 points) and his partner-in-crime, AJ Forte (16 points), the Tanners spooked away the Witches on enemy hardwood.

Despite Jordan Maxson’s 24 points, it wasn’t enough to complete a comeback attempt for Salem.

Cardinal Spellman 62

Bishop Fenwick 46

Bishop Fenwick met its match in the Cardinals on the road, but not without positives. Jimmy Vahey and James Meklis each scored nine points, while Vahey tracked down a dozen rebounds in defeat.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Lynn Tech 55

Innovation 30

No homecourt, no problem for Lynn Tech’s girls hoops team, which upped its record to 5-1 with a monstrous win against Innovation.

Engelyz Bingham had 24 points, 10 rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. She was followed by Aliyah Volquez (14 points, 9 steals, 5 rebounds), Allison Morales (10 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists), and Lesnee Izaguirre (5 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals).

Bishop Fenwick 74

Cardinal Spellman 16

Ahead of next Tuesday’s primetime matchup against St. Mary’s, the Lady Crusaders got the job done against Cardinal Spellman in blowout fashion.

Talk about versatility. Cecilia Kay (23 points, 5 steals), Celia Neilson (18 points, 9 steals), and Caitlin Boyle (7 points, 10 assists) led the scoring department, while Isabella Lopez-Marin and Anna Fertonani each dished out four assists.
