'Lynnebago' gets $75K at Arc Tank

LYNN — The Lynn Disability Network’s “Lynnebago” project is becoming a reality.

The project was one of three projects awarded cash grants from the Northeast Arc’s Arc Tank competition Tuesday.

The Lynnebago proposal was given an award of $75,000.

Lynn Disability Network’s Lisa Tulipani, who presented the project to a pane of experts, said it was more than the announcement that excited them.

“It wasn’t the announcement so much as the rationale they used when they chose it,” Tulipani said. “Having a panel of experts say, ‘Hey, your idea is really good, and we want to give you money for it’ is a testament to the work we’ve been doing and the way we’ve been doing it.”

Former Massachusetts Secretary of Health and Human Services Marylou Sudders offered the judges’ comments.

“What better place than Lynn, the City of Sin, to demonstrate great inclusion and acceptability and to demonstrate for all of the rest of the 350 municipalities in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that they should do this too and that you will share your blueprint with them and every place in Massachusetts and the United States,” Sudders said.

The Lynnebago is a mobile trailer containing a sensory room, communication room, and universal bathroom for people with disabilities that can be utilized at Lynn’s many outdoor community activities.

The project also won the fan favorite award, with 84 votes from attendees.

“That is remarkable because you work so hard to put something out there into the universe and to know that it resonated with someone other than just the people who created it,” Tulipani said. “To have that recognition and support of the entire room was something we didn’t anticipate and was, quite frankly, beautiful.”

Tulipani said that the approximate build time of the trailer is about six months, and their goal is to have it ready for the Diversity Matters Festival in August.

“It’s been our goal to be there,” she said. “What a beautiful way to say that diversity actually matters by making it truly inclusive.”
