You know what I’ve been thinking? Athlete of the Game, Athlete of the Week, or Athlete of the Month – you pick.
Dillon Reilly of Lynnfield’s boys soccer team cemented his legendary status on Saturday. Not only did his No. 2 Pioneers defeat No. 9 Monomoy 1-0 at Scituate High to win the Division 4 state championship, but Reilly was the hero.
The sniper scored the game-winning goal in the 64th minute. It was a deep try on a fastbreak, but Reilly cashed in from 30 yards out.
In the freezing cold, it was the junior captain’s 27th goal of the season – yes, junior.
Perhaps the bigger story, however, is that Reilly scored seven of Lynnfield’s eight tournament goals – and every Pioneers’ goal the last four games.
His goals were different, too. Sometimes, highly-aware Reilly found his own space near the net. And other times, well, he was just too skilled.
With the November Reilly had, consider him one of the best players in the state.
Also, shoutout to coach Brent Munroe, who captured his first state championship in 31 years (he’s a great coach and as classy as it gets).
Dillon, good week, and keep celebrating.
