Tips for Installing Lighting for Your Home’s Flagpole

When you hang an American flag on your home’s flagpole, you might feel so patriotic that you want your flag to flow in the wind, even during the evening hours. But it is essential to make sure it is well-lit. Not only so that everyone in the neighborhood can see it but also to keep it in accordance with the United States Flag Code. Read below for several tips for installing lighting for your home’s flagpole.

Choose a Good Location for the Lights

When you add lighting to your lawn, you want to ensure that people can see the flag and the pole. To make sure people can see the flagpole, attach one light to the pole itself or station it about 12 inches away.

However, when illuminating the flag itself, you must install at least two lights. Multiple lights will prevent the pole from casting a dark shadow over the flag. You must also position them at an appropriate distance on your lawn so that they will provide enough light for the flag.

Use the Right Light for Your Flags

When deciding which light is best to illuminate your flag, try using either warm or cool light. Both have their advantages, including warm light’s ability to accentuate some of the colors in your flag. However, cool light can make your flag easier for people to view from a distance.

Cast the Right Beam on Your Flag

It can get very tricky when it comes to creating the right-sized beam spread for your flag. Although you may want to keep it narrow, you must make it wide enough to provide enough light for the entire flag and the directions that it can flow on your pole.

It is best to create a spread that will illuminate the flag and has a radius that takes the flag’s width into account. So, if your flag is five feet wide, ensure the radius’s circle is at least five feet from your flagpole.

These tips will help you appropriately illuminate the American flag on your lawn. You will have lighting that properly represents your patriotism and earns the awe of your neighbors.
